There’s this cat that strolls around my neighborhood. I always see him in the field behind the house hunting birds. He’s even gone after a couple ducks. He’s no match for ducks, trust me.
He never catches anything though. He’s a house cat, so his hunting skills could use some work. But hey, at least he tries. He’s a few steps ahead of most of us in that regard.
I remember when I was a kid, I thought I would write music, break dance or play basketball when I grew up.
Over the years, I gave up on all of those things. Because I was good in private, but when the time came time to perform, I couldn’t do it. Well, at least I thought I couldn’t. As a result, I never tried when I needed to.
Fast forward to today, I’m writing and I’m pretty decent at it. And even though I still struggle, I’ve realized that it takes conscious effort to accomplish anything worthwhile. Effort that has to be put forth, no matter what we think of ourselves. Even when we’re bound to fail like a cat chasing ducks.
The struggle may never go away and that’s okay. As long as we resist folding under our own negative thinking and we never make giving up a habit.
If there’s anything we should give up on, it’s our own self-conscious thinking. Not our dreams.
Regardless of how we define success, moving forward even when we feel uncertain is the key to accomplishing anything. There’s no time to wait around for confidence. It comes once we become comfortable with being uncomfortable.
There are no hacks or shortcuts. Face life head on, put in the effort and when you fall, get back up and try again.
The advice online is garbage. Nothing is going to teach us as well as our own experience. We’ve got to get out and get our hands dirty.
Give yourself to something completely. Lose yourself and chase the birds.
If you come home empty handed, there’s always tomorrow. And when there’s no tomorrow left, at least you can say you tried.
